Inside Bars and Coiled Ranges

How nested inside bars compress decision space, and when to treat them as pause rather than prediction.

Inside Bars and Coiled Ranges

An inside bar is a candle whose high and low sit entirely within the prior bar. Alone, it is a pause. In a sequence, it can become a coiled range that stores unfinished business.

We teach students to count nesting depth. One inside bar after a strong directional candle often resets attention. Three nested insides against a weekly level usually mean participants are waiting for a catalyst rather than inventing one.

Location still rules. An inside bar in the middle of a wide, featureless stretch of price rarely deserves a trade plan. The same structure pressed against last month’s swing high deserves a notebook page.

During practice lab, we mute the chart’s volume pane and ask readers to estimate whether the inside sequence feels like absorption or simple boredom. The answer rarely comes from a formula; it comes from comparing neighbouring sessions.

If you leave with one rule: do not forecast the breakout direction from the inside bar itself. Forecast only the levels that must be accepted or rejected for the pause to matter.
